Davora Group was founded by Dr Nishantha Nanayakkara, one of Sri Lanka’s finest academics, who has 17 years academic experience at University of Moratuwa and also a NDB Bank endowed Senior Fellow in Entrepreneurship
Dr Nanayakkara hails from Galle, Sri Lanka’s illustrious South. He went to Richmond College, one of South’s renowned schools, Richmond College, which has the honour of being the oldest school in Sri Lanka.
Dr Nanayakkara graduated from the University of Moratuwa where he did his first Bachelors Degree in Engineering – he completed his MSc and PhD at the prestigious Saga University of Japan where he was able to pioneer many projects. He undertook the advantage of the opportunities he got to continue his higher studies in Japan and arranged to have exchange
programs with the two universities. Not only that, he introduced a scholarship program thatpassed out students of University of Moratuwa can study in Saga University for their Masters and PhD
After completing his PhD in Japan, he returned to Sri Lanka in 1997 which a period that all Sri Lankans had to badly experience 7 ~ 10 hours power cut, island wide. This incident encouraged him to start-up our own renewable energy projects and he formed his first local company in Sri Lanka in 1997 as ENCO (Private) Limited. By diversifying to various industries, he now owns 21 companies
Dr Nanayakkara is credited with the undertaking of several hydro power initiatives globally.His concept of restoring ancient hydro power projects in Japan went on to become a dynamic initiative that saw hundreds of usable hydro power projects back in service. He has also spent a considerable time in Africa in introducing hydro power to the continent. He was identified as an Energy Expert for United Nations Industrial Development Organization [UNIDO] and the World Bank, for the development of hydropower projects in highly remote areas. All these international projects were handled by ENCO (Private) Limited and Hydro PowerInternational (Private) Limited.
In Sri Lanka, Dr Nanayakkara is credited with the success of many hydro power projects that have contributed towards the reinforcement of the national grid.
Dr Nanayakkara founded The Davora Group as a diversified conglomerate in Sri Lanka. The Group remains committed towards empowering Sri Lanka via economic activation and upliftment of communities through ethical investing and entrepreneurial intellectual capacity building.
